November 14, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
[Scroll down for English]
Sirawith “Ja New” Serithiwat is a Thai political activist involved in demonstrations against the military junta ruling Thailand since 2014. As a student activist, Serithiwat has opposed the prime minister and members of parliament, who undemocratically took power in a situation with strong parallels to Taiwan’s own history of authoritarian rule. In organizing for democratic reforms in the country, Serithiwat’s activism has often drawn large crowds — despite the Thai junta’s restrictions on political activities and ban on assemblies of five or more people.
In June, 2019, Serithiwat was hospitalized in critical condition after being beaten by men wielding baseball bats. This was not the first attack on the dissident that month. Over the years, Serithiwat has been arrested numerous times by the Thai government for his political organizing. Some of these cases remain pending, including incidents involving overnight detainments and interrogations by military officers in 2014 and 2016.
On November 14th in Taipei, New Bloom welcomes Sirawith Serithiwat to share his experiences as a political dissident and activist in Thailand, opening up discussion on how he has come to see Taiwan’s position in relation to Thailand today. The event will be primarily conducted in English, though limited Mandarin interpretation can be provided as necessary.
